Summary

Elena starts chapter 37 by announcing that the party leads to a long separation from Lila. With all of Lila's difficulties, she had never deliberately humiliated her friend. Elena finishes school and takes a job at a bookstore in Naples without speaking to Lila. She sees Armando, but her self-confidence is dashed from Lila's treatment, and she puts him off. Soon after, Nino shows up and takes Elena out for a walk. He gives her a journal to read and they discuss the Professor and her family. He suggests an article for Elena to read, and tells her to give it to Lila next. Elena learns that he will be on Ischia for the summer. He promises to see her again soon.
