Summary

Pages 173 – 177—Dinesh wakes up to the sound of an explosion. He opens his eyes to the pitch black pre-dawn and finds that Ganga is no longer laying next to him. The sound of another explosion comes from the camp, followed by a succession of others. Dinesh looks around the clearing for an indication of where Ganga might have gone. He considers the possibility that she simply went to use the bathroom or for a walk and would return shortly. However, Dinesh remembers the uncertainty on Ganga’s face after she had held him when he cried and is convinced that she went back to the camp.

Dinesh walks through the jungle carefully and feels the soreness throughout his body is a result of sleeping properly for the first time in months. As he listens to the bombs drop, Dinesh thinks about Ganga’s motives...
