Right Arm

Essun’s right arm turns to stone and Hoa devours it. This is representative of the loss of her orogenic ability.

Essun’s runny-sack represents life. This sack is important to those on the road from the geode to Rennanis because it contains the supplies they need to stay alive. This sack is so important that it is the first thing that Essun thinks about and tries to locate when she wakes from her coma.

Shards of Iron

These shards of iron are representative of Father Earth’s revenge on the people. Father Earth used these shards to investigate the obelisks and try to determine what the people were going to do with them. Father Earth also caused the test bore to explode and the shards to kill the officials overseeing the launching of the Plutonic Engine.
