Vivienne Michel, or Viv, is a sweet young woman raised in Quebec and educated in London. Viv is an orphan raised by an aunt. Viv's affection-starved childhood leaves her anxious to find love in her relationships with men, but she has little success in this. Viv's first love, Derek, turns out to simply be using her for physical pleasures. Viv's second lover, a man who is controlling and boring, helps Viv convince herself that this life has its simple pleasures.
