Summary

In the prologue, it is described how Mata Hari was killed by firing squad on October 15, 1917. She gave her lawyer a long letter that she had written as well as two manilla envelopes filled with newspaper clippings. Before she was killed, she requested not to be blindfolded.

In Part 1, Mata Hari writes that she hopes her lawyer, Mr. Clunet, will never receive the letter she is writing but is afraid if things turn out badly, the letter will be disposed of. She thinks Clunet will be busier because he defended her, even though he allowed an innocent woman to die. She indicates that if she is killed, she will be killed for the crimes she did not commit, not the ones she did commit. She believes she was a woman who was born at the wrong time.
