Naples 2060

John Candotti is told by Brother Edward that Sandoz is nowhere to be found. Candotti finds him standing at the shore. He offers Sandoz a coat, but is met with hostility. Sandoz repeatedly attempts to throw stones into the water, suffering his injured hands and the freezing cold for hours until he gets the stones the desired distance. He walks past Edward and Candotti speaking the words "Not Magdalene, Lazarus".

Vincenzo Giuliani spies on the episode from a balcony in the Naples house. Given Sandoz's reaction to the note Guiliani snuck into his room, he believes Sandoz to be guilty of the wrongdoing that took place on Rahkat. He confronts Sandoz, ordering him to his office.

Giuliani tells Sandoz he is unimpressed by Sandoz's self-pity; that others have broken their vows too...
