Emilio Sandoz meets with Sofia Mendes for the first time in August 2014 on the campus of John Carroll University. As she greets Sandoz, the two exchange the only small talk they would have for the next few months.

They have sessions three times a week, with the sessions having an almost hostile manner. Sandoz also teaches a beginners course in Latin, where he finds a good friend in his star pupil, Anne Edwards. Sandoz confides in Anne about Sofia—he is intrigued by her but completely baffled about the root of her hostility.
