Good versus Evil

The basis of the novel is that there are good people known as the Soulkeepers who are battling against the bad people, known as the Watchers. The two sides of the battle have been waging war since the beginning of human history when Lucifer was kicked out of Heaven and took a group of angels with him. From that time, the Soulkeepers have been fighting to keep the fallen angels from wreaking havoc on the world. The Soulkeepers are not always victorious, as seen in the fact that the fallen angels are holding many humans captive in Nod.

The gifts of the people are often hidden. A person may not even be aware of the gift, let alone of their duty to use it to fight evil. Jacob does not know about his power when he arrives in Paris, but Dr. Silva immediately knows...
