Chapter 3 Pages 310-318 and Epilogue Summary

Charlie's hand is amputated in Jacksonville. While Charlie is in recovery, Eli goes to the same restaurant he had visited before, but only drinks a glass of water. When they arrive at their home in Oregon City, there house is in disarray from a burglary. There is a letter there from Rex admitting that he stole the money. Eli gets Charlie situated into his bed and looks around the house.

Eli decides he will never sleep in his house again. Eli goes to the commodore's mansion. Eli has a blade in his hand when he enters the mansion. Eli finds the commodore drunk in his bathtub.
