Chapter 3 Pages 168-184 Summary

When Charlie and Eli arrive in San Francisco, they find the harbor filled with ships and utter chaos all around them. They talk to a barefoot man holding a chicken. The man says that thriftiness has left the area. The man also says that he could return to his own town but that he would not be the same man he was before.

Eli and Charlie arrive at Morris' hotel, but he's not in his room. Eli finds a bell in the hotel room to ring for service. The bell is hooked to a horn to talk into. The woman thinks it's Mr. Morris. She says they are glad to have him back because they were worried when he left with the little bearded man. They admit they are not Mr. Morris, but are his colleagues.
