Chapter 2 Pages 156-167 Summary

When Mayfield shows them the insides of the open safe, he says finding the gold that is now inside the safe was the only time he was lucky in his life. Mayfield leaves. The brothers count the money and hide the gold that is too heavy to take with them. They get away with about fifteen thousand dollars, which Eli and Charlie split in half.
