Chapter 2 Pages 99-117 Summary

The boy rides his hidden horse with the Sisters brothers to California. The horse, Lucky Paul, looks sickly and decrepit. The boy insists his horse can keep up, but they lose the horse and the boy right away. Eli and Charlie ride away while Charlie laughs heartily. They ride until they reach California.

They run into a gold prospector almost right away. Charlie insists that there isn't any gold in the nearby river stream. Eli goes after the prospector while Charlie uses the bathroom. Eli hears a rifle cock behind his head. The prospector mistakes Eli and Charlie for the workers of the big boss, Mayfield.

Eli gets the rifle away from the prospector and shoots, but it isn't loaded. Charlie comes out of the woods at that time and shoots the prospector in the head, killing him. Eli...
