Chapter 1 Pages 59-78 Summary

Charlie drinks the morphine Eli brought him from the chemist. Charlie realizes Eli overheard him. Eli leaves, but Charlie begs Eli not to go. Eli winds up spending some time with the girl that sells baths in the lobby. He goes to the girl's room in the hotel, which is sparse and very unlike a room belonging to a woman. Eli removes the stitches from his mouth from the tooth extractions. He's removing the stitches too early so they strings are coated with blood. Then, Eli shows the woman his toothbrush and paste. She is new to brushing her teeth too, so she gets her toothbrush and paste and they brush their teeth together.

Eli starts to talk to the woman. When she asks about his mother, Eli admits that she won't have anything to do with him or...
