Chapter 1 Pages 38-58 Summary

Tub's eye is red and swollen, and Tub is acting strange. They reach the camp of the five prospectors Charlie killed for the ax. Charlie tells his about the killings while he and Eli empty their pockets. They ride off until dark, where they stop at a town, where Charlie buys some new clothes and Eli buys a new hat. As they ride away, Eli mentions that the man selling clothes has an honorable business that he might like to have some.

They share the only room left at the hotel. Eli shows Charlie the toothbrush and toothpaste, but Charlie says he doesn't like it. Charlie says it makes Eli look like a rabid beast.
