Chapter 1 Pages 19-37 Summary

The morning after setting up camp, Eli finds a spider in his boot. Eli is afraid of spiders, and he falls sick with a fever from the spider bite. Charlie goes to the nearest town for the doctor to obtain some medicine for Eli that ends up putting Eli to sleep. After a few days, they start riding on their journey again. Eli feels as if he is not entirely in his body, however.

One morning, Charlie is surprised when he looks at Eli. He hands Eli a plate to look into and Eli can see the left side of his face is swollen, which they conclude is blood pooling in his face that needs lancing. In the next town, they find a dentist, who says he has a tooth problem. Eli thinks the spider bite is the reason...
