Flavius wears a signet ring with the image of a dolphin on it which is the symbol for his family. Justin recognizes the same image as the one that appears on his grandmother's cosmetics box, validating that they belong to the same family.

The broken eagle of the lost Ninth Legion had supposedly disappeared when the Legion had been lost in the North country. However, when Flavius finds it in Aunt Honoria's hypocaust, it becomes clear that their ancestor, Marcus, who had been discharged from service due to injuries, had hidden the eagle at the house. It has remained there for nearly 150 years and even though it is broken and tarnished, Flavius and Justin attach it to a spear and it becomes the icon for their little ragtag Legion.
