The Grove

The Grove is the asylum that Alicia is incarcerated in and Theo begins his work at the very beginning of the novel. It is described as a small hospital in the middle of a much larger unit that is struggling with outside pressure and may soon be forced to close down. The director, Diomedes, believes in holistic care, but is terrified of losing his beloved hospital. Only two patients are highlighted within the Grove - Elif and Alicia- and it is implied that there are not many others left in the hospital. Ironically, Diomedes attempt to revitalize the Grove by hiring Theo eventually leads to its’ downfall due to Theo’s involvement in Gabriel’s death and the attempted murder of Alicia.
