Summary

In Chapter Seventeen, Paul remembers the last time he went into the Shadows with Charlie and the others in his childhood. They took the route behind James’ house and he saw Carl watching them. Paul followed them into the woods, remembering how stupid he felt for thinking he was being watched. Furthermore, Charlie always told them stories of the Shadows being haunted. Charlie stopped about thirty minutes in a seemingly random clearing that had been on fire. Billy pulled out a slingshot and a knife, handing the former to Charlie who then grabbed a rock and pointed the slingshot at Paul’s face. As Paul realized he did not know the three kids anymore, Charlie pretended to shoot Goodbold in the eye saying it would have killed him. James took the slingshot and Charlie helped him aim at the same spot, but James...
