Summary

In 1440, building is underway on Henry VI's cherished projects: the foundation of Eton College and King's College in Cambridge. After the deaths of several of his elder family members, Henry's adult rule begun "with an embarrassment of landed riches" (157). His generous character was revealed early through his large patronages and gifts to various friends, family members, and nobles. His extreme generosity makes his council anxious and they advise him not to materially disadvantage himself. However, Henry is either unwilling or unable to heed this advice and continues to distribute gifts and pardons over-generously. He is criticized for lacking foresight and judgment, though at only eighteen, it is hoped he will grow out of his naivety. It is clear that, unlike his father, he is determined to pursue a policy of peace.
