Summary

Plans for Irina and Teddy’s wedding forged ahead in “The Carrier.” Those around Irina began to notice her weight loss, which she attributed to the depression she felt after Sally left her. Irina began distancing herself from Teddy even though she “tried to love him” (228). Irina had seen Sally twice since their break up, and the second time Sally was meeting with Henry—leading Irina to believe that she was interested in Henry all along. Irina asked Anderson about the “possibility of a foreign posting" to escape her pain (229). That night, Irina’s found her mother unable to see out of her left eye. They visited the doctor and later received news that her mother had a brain tumor. Rather than seek treatment, her mother insisted that she live the rest of her life...
