Summary

In Chapter 20, which returns to the third-person narration, just a month before Chris is murdered Joanne and her friends corner Julia after volleyball practice. When Joanne warns Julia to keep Selena away from Chris, Julia is shocked. Joanne realizes that Julia is not aware of what is happening. Joanne laughs and describes how she and Gemma caught Chris and Selena together in the cypress grove. Later, however, Finn brags to Julia about how he disabled the alarm on the fire door so the boys could get out at night. Julia realizes that it is possible that Joanne was not lying. She asks Finn if he is friends with Chris. She learns that it was Chris’ idea to tamper with the door. Julia wants to bash Chris’ face in.
