He can literally quickly disappear into thin air and because no one knows who he is or how he seems to know everything about everyone, he is intangible. However, like smoke that results from fire, his heart and motives are dark. In the same way, anyone who crosses The Smoke will be in danger and in the path of his cruel actions.
