The cab drives towards the docks, and eventually stops. Van Eeden tells Sally that she may either come with him on a ship going east, or she can stay and he will kill her. He explains that he had an arrangement with Lockhart and Selby Shipping Company to trade opium. Mr. Lockhart refused to deal in opium, even the legitimate, high quality stuff that was stamped with the government's seal of approval. Van Eeden therefore came to a secret agreement with Selby.
