Motorcycles

Toad is enchanted with the idea of purchasing a motorcycle because it would allow him to seek thrills while pushing the boundaries of lawfulness. As Toad's yearning for a motorcycle is described: "The temptation was too much. That glorious machine! The noise, the smell, the smoke, the bystanders' terror!" (56).

Novels

Beryl's profession as a novelist leads her to often reflect on the similarities and differences between real life and novels. Beryl uses the same thought process that she utilizes in writing novels to help deduce the location of Rabbit and Toad (172).

Northumberland

While Northumberland is technically a setting (albeit one that is never visited, in-scene), the region is a stand-in for the sorts of places that are so bland and dull they are essentially prisons.
