Summary

In Chapter 25, Josephine is visited by a farmhand, who tells her that someone has ripped out a section of crops on the farm. A week later, one of their pigs turns up dead. Josephine tells Major to apologize to Vern, but Major is reluctant, still concerned about respect. That evening there is a knock at the door. It is the Ku Klux Klan. Major refuses to apologize a second time over the tree incident. Josephine recognizes Vern among the men by his shoes. They break a window before Major grabs his father's shotgun and begins firing, scaring them off.

Chapter 26 returns to 1855. Jupiter convinces Josephine's parents to take him with them when they run away. They leave in the dead of night. Josephine is frightened, but her mother reassures her.

Chapter 27 returns to Ava's perspective. Ava goes to Gladys' house, telling her everything...
