Chapter 4, the Masks of Arnaud du Tilh Summary and Analysis

Arnaud Du Tilh's family comes from the province of Languedoc, on the other side of the Garonne River from Artigat, the new home of the Guerre family. Arnaud's home town is Sajas, where there is a Lord or "Seignier" who puts more limits on the peasant's liberty than in Artigat. There is a larger rural population in this area and more people are involved in sharecropping since they don't own enough land to farm. It seems that Martin Guerre's town is a more pleasant place to live, a possible incentive to Arnaud to impersonate Martin.
