Summary

“Chapter the First” (Chapter 1) – A preface to the chapter describes the Messenger of the Immortals arriving, looking for a permanent Vessel, and chasing indie kid Finn to his final fate. In the main section of the chapter, Mikey Mitchell, his sister Melinda (called Mel), Henna, and Mikey’s friend Jared are in the Field, hanging out on a windy day. The Field is a property plot near the woods that has never been built on and is just down the rural road from where Mikey lives. Henna and Mel talk about guys they think are cute, which bothers Mikey because he likes Henna. Jared, a secretly gay football team linebacker, speaks of true love, while Mel believes the heart does not actually control anything.
