Summary

After Dave finishes his program in Iowa City, they move back to New Haven. They have now been together for two years. Jamison sees this as their second chance, especially since New Haven was the city where their relationship had begun. But for Leslie the city is also filled with nostalgic memories, all the good time she had had drinking. She knows there are AA meetings happening in New Haven too, “like a secret city happening underneath” (343), but she is not sure she wants to attend them just yet. In fact, Leslie has secretly started entertaining the possibility of drinking again. Finally, the idea builds to the point where she cannot hold it in. She confides in Dave and tells him she is thinking about drinking again. She tells him she really thinks she can do better. At this point she is nine months...
