Summary

In Chapter Five, "Shame," Jamison starts hanging out with Dave without telling Peter. A canvassing trip for Obama results in their kissing. Jamison feels great excitement and giddiness toward this romantic possibility. She breaks up with Peter so she can pursue her new relationship with Dave. One night, Dave makes her a drink while she waits in his living room. He makes her a Cosmopolitan and puts out a tray with pomegranate seeds and cheese to nibble on while she waits. Jamison enjoys the sophisticated snack, but at the same time she feels, "This was food for another type of person. I wanted to turn the plastic spigot on some box wine and eat six lemon bars and a slice of cake" (138). In Dave's presence, she starts to moderate her drinking.
