Summary

In Chapter 47, Amos found Liza at daybreak. Florry fainted when she heard Liza was dead. Nix and Roy located Liza in the cemetery. The empty pill bottle indicated that she had committed suicide. When Florry had woken and found that Liza was gone, she went to her house and called Joel and the doctor. Joel had passed the sheriff’s car leaving his home. Florry was having chest pains and Joel insisted that she go to the hospital.

Joel and Stella at first planned a private burial but were convinced that their mother deserved a decent funeral. The only positive moment in the funeral was when Joel spotted Mary Ann’s face in the crowd.
