Temple

Temple is a street-wise teenager who is the main character of the book. She's never known a life without zombies and she is accustomed to killing them. The situation has made her hard. She vaguely remembers life in an orphanage and recalls a little boy who may have been her brother. Temple is self-sufficient but also takes responsibility for the safety of others when they are weaker than she. This is seen with the "dummy" she befriends. Though she has no loyalty to him when they meet, she sees a human who is weakened and she sets out to keep him safe. This is an important aspect of Temple's character. Temple isn't educated and is unable to read but she's quite capable in most situations despite that. When she learns that Maury has family in Texas, she sets out to take him there.
