Anton's Musical Instruments

Anton’s musical instruments are a symbol of his commitment to purity and goodness, and therefore the resistance. The instruments are Anton’s contribution to the resistance, in his own way. They are also resonant with the theme of the Power of Music. Hawker introduces the instruments in Chapter 2. They are so important to Anton that he travels with them - in war time - to Unterboihingen. After marrying Elisabeth, he brings them to her home and stores them in the shed.
