Summary

Chapters 29 - 31 include the first half of Part 5, “Bell Song; July 1944 - May 1945” (257). Chapter 29 opens in the middle of July, while Anton and the boys work on the animal pen. Suddenly, a man comes running towards them; shouting to Anton that Father Emil needs to see him at once. Anton races to St. Kolumban, filled with anxiety that something has happened to the Red Orchestra. When he arrives, Father Emil tells him that there was an “attempt” yesterday (262). One of Hitler’s colonels had a bomb in their suitcase that went off and killed four, but not their main target (Hitler). The chapter ends as Emil confides in Anton that the Red Orchestra is trying to use poison to kill Hitler.
