In chapter twenty-one, Max writes a letter to Vanessa Young, a woman with whom he is in love. He met her in Frostburg when she came to visit her brother. He has never touched her, but they have written letters. He begs her to see him.

U.S. Marshal Pat Surhoff takes Max away from Fort Carson. He gives Max all of his new identity papers in the name of Max Reed Baldwin.
