Summary

In Chapter 21, Randalin, a member of the council, enters Jude's room. She immediately dismisses the guards who were there and puts Fand in charge of guarding her. Jude returns to Randalin who says members of the lower courts are arriving. While they claim to be there in support of Cardan, he feels they are looking for weaknesses. He says “There has never been a mortal Queen of Elfhame” (190), and that Jude should step down. When someone enters, Randalin begins to shout before he realizes it is Cardan accompanied by Grima Mog. Cardan takes Randalin into another room. Though Jude cannot hear the exact conversation, she hears the “menace of his tone” (191). Jude, knowing that Grima Mog is a cannibal, tries not to think about what might be in the soup she brought. She just eats it.
