Summary

Chapter 33 is titled “East.” Niclays dreams back to the years he spent with Jannart. Jannart was publicly married to Aleidine with a son, Oscarde, but was privately in love with Niclays. They talked about finding a place where they can live openly together. Jannart wanted to wait awhile, citing the presence of his young granddaughter, Truyde. One day, Jannart showed Niclays a scrap of text he had inherited from his aunt who had been an official of Orisima, with instructions that it should never be returned to the East. He has heard of a Seiikinese library he believes might be able to help him.
