Summary

Chapter 12 is titled “East.” Tane continues to work through the competition. Turosa is rude, making it clear that he believes only highborn people should become dragonriders. Onren does not do well when they fire arrows from horseback. Onren and others plan to go out to a tavern. Tane is amazed that they do not feel the need to continue to practice. She fears that Turosa might have tampered with her horse because it stumbled during the test. She writes a letter to Susa. Meanwhile, Niclays is taken to Cape Hisan and asked to identify the woman who brought Sulyard to his door. Soldiers bring in Susa, who has been brutally beaten during questioning. The government official announces that Niclays will be placed under house arrest in Ginura and Niclays is thrilled with this news because he simply wants to escape Orisima...
