Point of View

A good deal of this story is told from the first person point of view of Duncan, the president of the United States. The use of the first person point of view makes the reader feel as if he is interacting with Duncan on a personal level. Since the author is trying to portray Duncan in a way that proves he is still just a regular man even though he is serving as president, this first-person point of view helps to portray that idea. The reader has a first-hand look into Duncan’s thoughts and emotions as he misses his wife, fears for his daughter’s safety, and prays that his illness does not interfere with his job. The reader also witnesses as Duncan struggles with difficult decisions, like whether or not to bomb a terrorist who has his wife and children with him.
