Summary

Chapter 20: Veblen, Bill, Marion, and Melanie go to see Paul in the intensive care unit of the hospital, where Paul in unconscious but stable. They learn that an eyewitness report stated that Cloris Hutmacher’s car sped up just before hitting Paul. Bill believes this to be intentional foul play in response to Paul’s incriminating letter against Hutmacher Pharmaceuticals, and he swears vengeance against the company. Melanie and the Vreelands get along surprisingly well, and Veblen sits by Paul’s bedside for a long time, speaking to him to try to wake him up. Eventually, he responds and emerges from his unconscious state.
