Summary

The novel opens with a map of Pantala, the continent that is the main setting for the events of this novel, followed by an overview of the three tribes of dragons who live there – the HiveWings, LeafWings, and SilkWings. The final page of the opening is “The Lost Continent Prophecy.” This is a prophecy issued by a NightWing from Pyrrhia named Moon calling for dragons to unite with “the dragons who flee from the Hive” (13) in order to face a “great evil” that threatens them all.

In the Prologue, a LeafWing named Bryony is among the LeafWings near the Bloodworm Hive. Sundew's father, Hemlock, is also present. Bryony does not believe they can use the tiny filament of flamesilk to burn down this enormous Hive but Hemlock assures her the plan will work. A SilkWing named Grayling arrives.
