Chapters 9 and 10 Summary

In chapter nine, Hope is wakened in the middle of the night by the rude woman's screams. She says she saw someone in their room and Hope realizes it was Eliza. She insists they leave but her husband objects and she finally agrees to stay in another room. A young couple, eager for a chance to see the ghost, trades rooms. Later, Hope is talking to Eliza and says she realizes Eliza was getting even with the woman for her rudeness. Suddenly, Eliza appears and says, "Good riddance." Hope's thoughts immediately turn toward helping Eliza and she says she needs more information about Eliza's fiancé if she's ever going to find him. Eliza fades away without offering more. The next day, Hope tells Carolee about the encounter.
