Summary

The story opens shortly before the 15th birthday of the protagonist, Norah. Norah lives with her parents and her twin siblings. Norah’s older sister is an adult and lives elsewhere. Norah has a highly strained relationship with her parents. She is rude, disrespectful, and ungrateful towards her parents. She is also generally unruly, and spends many nights out of the house with her similarly delinquent friends. In addition, she sometimes writes cruel things about her parents on Facebook. Her parents say that because of Norah’s behavior, they will give her nothing for her birthday and will not have a party for her. However, on Norah’s birthday, Norah’s parents surprise her with a party and with several expensive presents. Norah’s older sister and Norah’s grandmother both visit for the party.
