In chapter 4, Lorraine has become a constant visitor at Sissy's house. Lorraine likes to talk about boys with Sissy, a subject Sissy knows little about and is embarrassed to admit she knows little about. Sissy is continuing the driving lessons with her mother and has learned about her mother's trip to Kentucky, including the hitchhiker she once picked up. After the lesson, Lorraine and Sissy go to the river for a swim. Lorraine is excited at first, but falls into a depression when she sees boys there.
