Summary

In Chapter 2, Jill wakes up to find baby Alice awake and out of her crib. She brings Alice back to her bed, where Alice falls asleep again, but Jill continues to think about the cottage and about Tom's infidelities. She thinks that she can have an easier life away from Tom and that life will be better in general away from other people. She takes Harriet, Roland, and Fran to church to listen to her father's sermon, leaving Alice with her mother. The children are in awe of how serious Jill can be when she is in church. Roland listens to the sermon intently but Harriet spends the time thinking about the church itself. Over lunch, Roland and Grantham discuss the sermon but every time Harriet goes to say something, Jill cuts her off. Sophy sees this and tries to encourage Harriet...
