Summary

In Chapter 9, Four awakes in the morning. Nine arrives and says that he spent the night in a village. Nine used the quad to help the villagers move the husk of an old fallen bomber plane. Four continues to be baffled by Nine and continues to ignore him. Nine goes on to say that he had a party with the villagers, and that a man asked Nine to have sex with his daughter. Nine says that he declined because she appeared to be only 15 years old.

In Chapter 10, Four continues to pave. He passes a river in which boys are playing. Four knows that the boys are putting themselves at risk of contracting typhoid. To Four’s chagrin, he sees that one of the boys in the river is actually Nine. Four is furious, but he does not stop. His path soon brings him...
