McConnell has a Ph.D in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin (where she is an adjunct professor) and is a certified Applied Animal Behaviorist. For twenty years she founded and ran Dog's Best Friend Ltd., which provided training and rehabilitation for aggressive or problematic dogs.
