Summary

Before Part 3 begins, Hooper writes a title page that says, “Part 3: April 1873 - August 1877; London, England” (185). Chapter 22 starts as May has just arrived in London alone. She is outside sketching when she meets an American couple - William and Violet Keith. Violet is an artist herself, and the three of them begin chatting, Violet immediately befriending May. They offer to help May get a copy pass so she can start copying originals at the National Gallery. May continues to spend time with the Keiths and begins to copy J. M. W. Turner’s originals at the National Gallery. She does not however know how to start making money from her art, and asking for help from her sister is abhorrent to her. The chapter ends with her worrying about her shrinking savings.
