The mall is the place where Ivan, Bob, and Ruby first met. The mall is the main setting for the first book in the series, but in this novel it only exists in flashbacks to Bob's past. When Bob was abandoned, he walked to the mall by chance and found Ivan, his best friend. Ivan had been living in a small enclosure in the mall for 27 years. He had nothing but a television, an old elephant named Stella, and art supplies to keep him company for all those years. The mall was a place of refuge for Bob as a puppy with no home, but it is also a place of sadness and desolation.
