Summary

In Chapter 9, Vianne is in her bedroom after confronting Isabelle about changing her behavior. She thinks about her mother's death and her father abandoning her and Isabelle. She regrets that she abandoned Isabelle as well.

Vianne goes to the kitchen to check on the soup she is making and Beck comes in. He tells her about his wife and a baby on the way. She realizes he wants the war to end, too. Vianne asks if he will be having dinner with them and he tells her it would be an honor. He brings wine to dinner. Isabelle asks him if he knows about the bombing in Tours and says she was there. Vianne reminds her to think about Sophie, so Isabelle shows Beck to his seat. Isabelle refuses the wine and leaves dinner quickly. Sophie follows her. Vianne apologizes and Beck tells...
