Summary

In Chapter 21, Sugar finally gave Wade permission to open the lock on the trunk he and Merilee found in the cellar but insisted on being there when it was opened. Sugar felt fluttering in her chest while waiting for Wade to unlock it. Inside was a pair of army boots and what looked like an army uniform with all of the insignia removed. There was a bullet hole, crusted with blood, on the front of the shirt.

In Chapter 22, Wade and Merilee decided to be present when the police questioned Sugar about the trunk and its contents. She told the police the same story she told Wade and Merilee, that she did not know where the trunk had come from and that her father and Wade were the only ones with access to the cellar.
